Whataday!
Okay... it has happened again. I lost what I wrote. And damn it... it was so long and reflective pa naman. Hay...

It was about going to a depressed area today.
My initial thoughts were, "God, must have forgotten that such a place exists." Because the houses were all cramped and dirty. The ocean looked like a giant septic tank. The shore was littered with garbage. Children were running around makeshift wooden planks that had holes where they could go through. And the community worker I was with told me that it was not uncommon that children die because parents don't notice that they fall. It wasn't exactly the most beautiful place in the world.
After seeing men drinking their gin (probably after a day of fishing), I thought to myself, "Maybe these people do not let God in." On first glance, you could see that there were these ladies just sitting down and talking about the latest showbiz news or who got who pregnant in the neighborhood. I thought to myself, "why aren't you working at all?"
While crossing through almost-solid brackish waters (from all the garbage) to get to another area, I felt worse. These people hardly have an idea what they are doing everytime they throw their trash. And seeing a man dump his garbage and a dead dog floating near our boat, did not make me feel better.
But talking to one of the NGO's community PO officer did. I was humbled after hearing her say, "Gusto ko lang pong makatulong sa iba. Kelangan talaga." This was coming from a woman who was not being given a salary to help others... by a woman who had her own family to take care of... yet with the sincere desire to help her community. It was a ray of sunshine after a long day of walking and going through muddy puddles, festering garbage and cramped homes.
Going back throught the same gelloid sea, I was thinking how much of a challenge that place would be for the incoming volunteer. He might have the same initial reaction as I did. "This is a God-forsaken place." But once he learns to take a closer look, and listen, and understand the people, he will find out that God can take the form of a toothless middle-aged woman.
